How to Choose a Cooling Mat Size for Your Dog or Cat

A cooling mat only helps if your pet fits on it. Here's how to choose the right size of our Ice Silk Cooling Mat for Dogs and Cats in a couple of minutes, with a tape measure and a pet at nap time.

The short answer

Measure your pet lying stretched out, from the nose to the base of the tail, and choose a mat at least 10 cm longer. Look at the width too: it should be wide enough for your pet to lie on their side. If they're between sizes, or like to sprawl, size up.

Step 1: measure your pet

  1. Wait until your pet is lying stretched out, the way they flop down on a hot day.
  2. Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. Leave the tail itself out.
  3. Notice how much room they take up across when they lie on their side.

Step 2: compare with the six sizes

Size Mat (length × width) Pet's length, nose to base of tail
XS 40 × 30 cm up to 30 cm
S 50 × 40 cm up to 40 cm
M 60 × 50 cm up to 50 cm
L 70 × 55 cm up to 60 cm
XL 100 × 70 cm up to 90 cm
2XL 150 × 100 cm up to 140 cm

The last column follows the 10 cm rule above. The 2XL has about twice the lying area of the XL, for pets who sprawl. Sizes are measured by hand, so allow a small difference either way.

Two examples

  • A cat that measures 45 cm from nose to the base of the tail needs a mat at least 55 cm long, so the M (60 × 50 cm) suits them.
  • A dog that measures 75 cm needs at least 85 cm, so the XL (100 × 70 cm) suits them. If they like to sprawl on their side and 70 cm across looks tight, size up to the 2XL (150 × 100 cm).

Step 3: think about where it goes

The mat goes wherever your pet likes to rest: on the floor, in a kennel or inside a crate. If it's going into a crate or kennel, measure the floor inside as well, and choose the size that fits both your pet and the space. Heading away? It's collapsible and folds into a small pack for the trip.

What to expect from an ice silk mat

It's a fabric mat of ice silk and mesh, so there's nothing to refrigerate or charge, and it's ready to use straight away. It feels cool to the touch when your pet first lies on it. Because there's nothing inside to chill, it stays at room temperature rather than going cold, and it feels coolest laid in a shady spot out of direct sun.

Questions

Does a cooling mat need to go in the fridge?

Not this one. It's a fabric mat, so there's nothing to refrigerate or charge. Lay it in a shady spot, where it feels coolest.

My pet is between two sizes. Which should I choose?

Choose the larger size. The same goes for pets who like to sprawl out on their side, because the width matters as much as the length.

Are the sizes exact?

They're measured by hand, so allow a small difference either way. If your pet is right on the limit of a size, the next size up gives you some margin.
